Summary
The objective of this post is to introduce and gather feedback on a token-based system for curation, reputation, and discovery that SuperRare Labs has been working on and believe that the DAO should adopt. In this post, we provide links to the resources that will help you learn more about Rare Staking, most notably: the whitepaper, the testnet alpha dapp, and the github repo. Weâll also describe what we think the next steps should be and the areas where we think community contribution is most needed.
What is RARE Staking?
As part of the RARE Protocol, we propose a novel cryptoeconomic system in which users stake on each other to signal reputation and support, creating a peer-to-peer network similar to a web of trust. The statefulness of this network generates an open dataset for participant reputation at scale, without the use of verified credentials or centralized intermediaries. We anticipate that data generated by this network will aid users in discovering relevant and reputable content, resulting in powerful network effects that transcend any individual marketplace and promote increased visibility for new and emerging creators.
Motivation
We are proposing this system because we believe it will significantly enhance the utility of the RARE token and improve our current systems for decentralized curation. How exactly this system should be implemented as a consumer product and integrated into interfaces like SuperRare.com is an active area of discussion, and we are eager to gather feedback on both the protocol and how it should be used. The purpose of this post specifically is to gather feedback on the new cryptoeconomic system behind RARE Staking and serve as a jumping off point for further discussion and governance proposals.
Resources:
Below is a list of the most important resources relating to this initiative.
-
Rare Staking Whitepaper
- This document provides the technical specification of how the protocol operates, and provides context on its mechanism design, parameter optimization, and potential applications
-
Code repo
- This repo contains all of the smart contracts within the staking protocol and is open sourced. Please feel free to read through the code and provide feedback.
-
Alpha dapp
- We partnered with Protofire to research and develop a basic front end for interaction with the staking protocol. Currently, it is pointed to staking contracts that have been deployed on Goerli.
- Please experiment with the alpha dapp and submit any bugs or UX improvements here, please direct any questions to the discord below.
- In order to use the app youâll need to use these faucets for Goerli Eth and Goerli RARE
-
Discord
- While long form feedback should be posted to this or other threads in the forum, we have also spun up a discord server for users and contributors to jam in real time as we work on the protocol and the alpha dapp.
How to get involved
This is a wide reaching initiative and there are many opportunities for the community to get involved. Iâve highlighted four primary areas below, but if you have any additional ideas, questions, or feedback, please do not hesitate to share your thoughts.
- Tell us what you think
- Do you feel this is useful and something that the DAO should adopt? Do you see risks that arenât being accounted for? Putting our brains together will ultimately make the end result stronger.
- After reading the whitepaper and experimenting with the prototype, please post on the forum or hop in the discord to share your thoughts!
- Contribute to the protocol
- While weâve gone to great lengths to optimize the smart contracts, we would love to see what others have to say. If you see something in the protocol that could be more secure, gas efficient, or otherwise improved, please open an issue or create a pull request in the repo with your proposed changes.
- Parameter optimization and modeling
- Much of the model calibration to date has been based on experimentation and high level mechanism design considerations. The development of robust models for parameter optimization and the visualization of tradeoffs would be extremely valuable. Details about parameter optimization tradeoffs can be found in the âConfigurable Parametersâ section of the whitepaper.
- Building systems on top of staking data
- If staking is adopted, we will have access to a massive dataset that can be used to develop sybil-resistant reputation metrics, recommendation engines, and other constructs that increase discoverability and unlock possibilities for further protocol and product development. If you have ideas for integrations or thoughts on where this could go, please share them in the forum and on discord.
What to expect
As we gather feedback over the coming weeks, we will be working on two SIPs:
- One SIP to propose the DAO take ownership of the RARE Staking contracts and deploy them to mainnet.
- Another proposing a modification of the bazaar such that a portion of the network fee from each sale is diverted away from the DAO treasury and into the the sellerâs RARE pool, if one exists, as compensation for the curation data generated by the pool.
After these initial proposals are brought forward, we are committed to working with the community and technical contributors to improve, maintain, and build on top of the protocol. This is just the beginning!
